Helpful tip for dell 3100cn colour laser printer owners:
Dell 3100cn drum imaging drum rechipping reusing replacement laser printer do it yourself reuse emptying toner bin replacing chip
1/ As I had to work this one out myself, here's instructions in case anyone else finds them helpful (if you do, say hello!)
2/ On the side of the drum casette, there's a plastic plug the size of a small coin, prize it out, the chips in there and its easily replaced (make sure you remove both the top and the lower bit otherwise new chip won't fit in, I got chip from www.TonerTopUp.co.uk for £15.
3/ YOu should empty the bin that collects excess toner. Take off the top and bottom plastic panels (two cross head screws in the lower one, six in the top one. Beware of undoing two screws along the top at the side that look like they keep the cover on, but actually locate a couple of small rollers, I undid these but soon worked out how to replace them
4/ You then have access to the bin which is at one end. It has a plate with three screws along one side, and three lugs along the other. On a piece of newspaper, undo the three screws and open the lid, tip out the excess toner.
5/ Replace and clean everything up, and you've saved yourself £100.
6/ I'm told the penalty for reusing the drum is that quality may deteriorate - but it won't wreck the printer. As the drum unit and toner units cost more than the printer itself, for me the risk is worth it.
Good luck . If anyone knows a work around to stop it ceasing to be recognised on a windows xp network, requiring daily reloading of drivers, please let me know!
